The Sporting Life W600 cabinet cards, distributed over a span of ten
years commencing in 1902, are a sprawling issue of cabinets offered as a
premium by the Sporting Life newspaper. With more than 700
known subjects featuring the work of the renowned Boston photographer
Carl Horner, the set is known today for its quality, stunning portraits
and impressive scarcity. As this attractive Three Finger Brown shows, a
black-and-white photo is framed using a light olive green theme, which
includes an ornate advertisement at the bottom.
The wide borders of these Cabinets have always served to protect the
central image and, while there is significant soiling and surface wear, that's exactly what has happened here with this example of Cincinnati pitcher Frank "Noodles" Hahn, graded Poor 1 by SGC. Often times, the technical grade of very old cards is
largely driven by the condition of the back, and while the reverse does
show significant paper loss and soiling, the front of this example has
its own issues, too. The corners
have all rounded, the edges show wear, there is some paper loss, and there is soiling and staining, as well. But the image is still gorgeous, showing a smiling, confident Hahn looking off to the distance. Regardless of the numerical grade, the scarcity of this issue far outweighs any cosmetic flaws on this example.
This is the only Type II example SGC has ever graded of this W600 Sporting Life Cabinet of Frank "Noodles" Hahn in his street clothes.
