Dave Foutz seemingly had two separate careers. The first half of his career, he was a dominant pitcher, going 126-55 from 1884 through 1888, winning the ERA title and leading the league with 41 wins in 1886 as he led the St. Louis Browns to a championship.
But after those first five years, he pitched much less frequently, instead spending most of his time in the outfield or at first base for Brooklyn. He batted over .300 three times in his career, and stole more than 35 bases five times. Foutz has six different cards in
the N172 set. This example depicts the Brooklyn pitcher ready to throw, with his right hand holding a ball at shoulder height.
Centering
is slightly east and south on the canvas. Soft corners with creases near each of the top two keep the grade from being higher, as does some edge chipping along the right side. The true culprit, however, is the staining and light paper loss on the back of the card, neither of which affect the front, but definitely hold the card back from grading higher.
