William Franklin "Bill" Hart went 17-23 with a 2.72 ERA for the 1889 Des Moines Prohibitionists of the Western Association. One of four different poses in the N172 set, this example depicts the Des Moines pitcher at the top of his windup, with his hands above his head and his feet on the ground. Hart is identified as one of the more scarce N172s in The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company.

The Authentic grade is explained by the evidence of trimming which can be found at the bottom border and perhaps the right edge. Luckily, no pertinent text was trimmed and the remainder of the card presents nicely. Though the printing is slightly underdeveloped and light, the image is beautiful and shows the 23-year-old pitcher with his bright future ahead of him. One large crease runs vertically to the left of Hart's body, with some edge chipping on the top and left side.  One of the more difficult subjects to find in the N172 issue.
