Philip Sydney "Red" Ehret pitched in 114 games for the Louisville Colonels of the National League from 1889 through 1891, going 48-56 and completing 93 of the 100 games he started. He came back for one final season with the team in 1898, but he went 3-7 in 12 games before finishing his career in the minor leagues. Ehret has five different poses in the N172 set, and as a player, Ehret is listed on the "Scarce Cards" list in The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company, identifying him as one of the more difficult subjects in the issue.

Centering is far south on the canvas, with the bottom half of the bottom row of text actually being cut off. While the contrast of the printing isn't incredibly high, the clarity of the image absolutely is. The details in Ehret's shoes, in the ball he's holding, and in the folds of his pants are clearly visible. There are three somewhat rounded corners, with minor chipping appearing especially at the left and bottom edges.

A light stain appears on the otherwise blank back, but it does not affect the front in any way. The only example of this 1887 N172 Old Judge which SGC has ever graded, one of the tougher cards to find.
