The first series of cards in the T206 set were issued beginning in
1909 in cigarette and loose tobacco packs through 16 different brands
owned by the American Tobacco Company. It is a landmark set in the
history of baseball card collecting due to its size and rarity, with
cards of over 500 major and minor-league players issued in the set
through 1911. It is known informally as the "White Border" set due to
the
distinctive white borders surrounding the quality color lithographs on
each card.
Hall of Famer Vic Willis holds a bat against his right shoulder in his black St. Louis
uniform and cap in front of a yellow background in this beautiful
example. The dramatic contrast of colors gives tremendous eye appeal.
Centering is fantastic, with rounded corners
and slight edge chipping explaining the card's technical grade. A small crease at Willis' eye level appears, but does not detract from the image. The printing on the tough American Beauty back is bold and
beautiful, though there are some small stain spots which accompany it. Willis' dark uniform on the front is the star of the show
here.
PSA has only graded 6 total examples of this T206 with an
American Beauty back, with five examples ever receiving a higher grade than the
Fair 1.5 offered here of St. Louis' Vic Willis.
