The first series of cards in the T206 set were issued beginning in
1909 in cigarette and loose tobacco packs through 16 different brands
owned by the American Tobacco Company. It is a landmark set in the
history of baseball card collecting due to its size and rarity, with
cards of over 500 major and minor-league players issued in the set
through 1911. It is known informally as the "White Border" set due to
the
distinctive white borders surrounding the quality color lithographs on
each card.
A striking red background dominates the canvas of this otherwise mostly-white card. Centering is to the far southwest corner, but not so low that any of the text is cut off from the bottom of the card. Corners are soft and rounded, which is consistent with the grade, but the bottom left shows some creasing, as well. The print registration is phenomenal on this one, giving it wonderful eye appeal. The printing on the tough American Beauty back is a little light, but it also shows very cleanly with almost no soiling.
SGC has only ever graded 7 total examples of this T206 with an
American Beauty back, with only four receiving a higher grade than the
Good 2 offered here of Baltimore's Sam Strang.
