The first series of cards in the T206 set were issued beginning in
1909 in cigarette and loose tobacco packs through 16 different brands
owned by the American Tobacco Company. It is a landmark set in the
history of baseball card collecting due to its size and rarity, with
cards of over 500 major and minor-league players issued in the set
through 1911. It is known informally as the "White Border" set due to
the
distinctive white borders surrounding the quality color lithographs on
each card.
Traded to the Red Sox in August of 1910 Frank Smith is one of the "team
change" variations in the T206 issue the "Chicago & Boston"
variation present in what is known as Print Group 3 - the 350-460 series
cards. Centering is southeast on the canvas, with rounded corners to match the grade. The left edge exhibits some light chipping, but the beautiful orange sherbet sky, solid green grass, and Smith's infections smile more than make up for any imperfections on the front. The printing on the Old Mill back is still dark after 115 years, but some light surface abrasions have cause a couple spots of color loss.
SGC has only ever graded 21 total examples of this T206 with an Old Mill
back, with only thirteen receiving a higher grade than the Good 2 offered here
of Chicago & Boston's Frank Smith.
