The first series of cards in the T206 set were issued beginning in
1909 in cigarette and loose tobacco packs through 16 different brands
owned by the American Tobacco Company. It is a landmark set in the
history of baseball card collecting due to its size and rarity, with
cards of over 500 major and minor-league players issued in the set
through 1911. It is known informally as the "White Border" set due to
the
distinctive white borders surrounding the quality color lithographs on
each card.
Due to the familiar back design the rarity of the Piedmont Factory 42
reverse is often misunderstood by collectors. According to
T206Resource.com the Factory 42 is ranked #10 in terms of overall back
scarcity just behind Carolina Brights and ahead of AB 460 Brown Hindu
and many other reverses often pursued by collectors with competitive
vigor. This example of Pittsburgh favorite Tommy Leach is quite
attractive, with nearly perfect centering only shading slightly south on the canvas. While the corners are softer and consistent with the grade, the edges are very nice and provide a beautiful frame for the gorgeous cotton candy sky behind Leach. The reverse is beautifully clean and bright, with fantastic, bold printing. Some light soiling near the bottom edge does little to detract from its beauty. The toughest decision about this gorgeous card is whether to display the front or the back.
SGC has only ever graded 5 total examples of this T206 with a Piedmont 350-460/Factory 42
back, with NONE receiving a higher grade than the VG 3 offered here
of Pittsburgh's Tommy Leach bending over.
