The first series of cards in the T206 set were issued beginning in
1909 in cigarette and loose tobacco packs through 16 different brands
owned by the American Tobacco Company. It is a landmark set in the
history of baseball card collecting due to its size and rarity, with
cards of over 500 major and minor-league players issued in the set
through 1911. It is known informally as the "White Border" set due to
the
distinctive white borders surrounding the quality color lithographs on
each card.
Hall of Famer Vic Willis holds a bat against his right shoulder in his black St. Louis
uniform and cap in front of a yellow background in this beautiful
example. The dramatic contrast of colors gives tremendous eye appeal. Centering is slightly east on the canvas with corners consistent to the grade. Edges are very nice, though a couple stains near the right side keep this one from grading higher than it already has. Some light snow and a light surface abrasion at Willis' mouth level further explains the technical grade. The Piedmont back is bright and clean, with only one soiling spot of note near the center. Plenty of eye appeal with the gorgeous colors on this Hall of Famer.
