John J. "Jack" Clements played for Philadelphia's National League team from 1884 through 1897, collecting 1,079 hits in exactly 1,000 career games for the franchise. Clements has three different
cards in
the N172 set. This
issue - depicting the Catcher standing at home plate with a bat at the ready - has the lowest PSA-graded population of the three.
The image is dark and shows outstanding contrast, with some mild taining appearing toward the bottom border. Centering is south and slightly east on the canvas, with rounded corners and some light paper loss at the bottom right corner. A red-ink stamp has been placed on the card's back, noting that this particular card was sold by J.L. Templeton Opera House Cigar Store in Council Bluffs, Iowa, a very interesting way to place this piece in history. The hobby places a premium on blank-backed cards onto which advertising has been stamped; this is the first N172 we have ever seen that bears such a mark.
