Elton P. "Ice Box" Chamberlain was an outfielder and pitcher who played 72 games for the St. Louis Browns between 1888 and 1890. In 1889, his one full year with the team, he went 32-15 in 53 games, throwing 421.2 innings. The next year, despite pitching only 30 games, he led the American Association with 6 shutouts. During at least one game of his career, Chamberlain alternated pitching arms on the mound.
Chamberlain has six different poses in
the N172 set. This example, card #73-6, which depicts him as a batter standing at the plate, ready to strike a ball which is visible in the frame - has the lowest graded population of all, with PSA only assessing two examples.
While there are some creases (which are more visible on the back of the card), the image is clean with exceptional contrast. The corners are fairly sharp, and while there is some light edge chipping on the right side, most of the three untouched edges are in good shape. The card's Authentic grade likely comes from what appears to be evidence of trimming on the left edge, however, the image quality is certainly more important than any grading company assessment.
