One of 62 supplements included with issues of The Sporting News between 1899 and 1900 the photos were produced by the National Copper Plate Co (who also issued their own similar prints) and featured beautiful images of the stars of the era with biographical information printed on the reverse. This example of pitcher Jack Chesbro is often considered the pitcher's "rookie" card. Distributed July 14 1900 Chesbro's first full season with the Pittsburgh Pirates the card exhibits obvious technical issues in the upper left as well as in the form of tears soiling and general wear. Sporting News supplements are difficult to find which is what makes even an example this poor condition-wise the object of desire for many Hall of Fame rookie collectors. Graded POOR 1 by Beckett Grading Services the only company with a holder large enough to encapsulate this issue.
