Two-time American League MVP (1961, 1962), Roger Maris, strides towards home plate in this handsome Type 1 photograph. Maris had just completed one of the most celebrated seasons for a hitter in the history of the game; historically battling teammate Mickey Mantle for the single-season home run record of 60 held by George Herman "Babe" Ruth. The Babe's record stood from September 30, 1927 until Maris surpassed him on October 1, 1961, the final day of the season. Maris' iconic #9 is on full display in this fantastic image, shot at Crosley Field during the 1961 World Series. Maris' Yankees would best the upstart Cincinnati Reds in five games, the slugger's first of three World Series Championships with two coming as a Yankee and a third added with the St. Louis Cardinals. Evidence of general handling wear, some visible creasing to the corners, and a small piece of the top edge has chipped away. Verso displays date stamping of October 18, 1961 with mild toning present around the perimeter. A hologram from the Boston Herald Archive has been applied to lower-right corner. 8" x 10" photo has been authenticated and encapsulated as Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
