Slugger Roger Maris bats in this original Type 1 photograph hailing from the 1961 World Series. Captured at Crosley Field during Game 3, 4, or 5, Maris bats from the left side before a capacity crowd. Maris, the two-time American League MVP (1961, 1962), had just completed one of the most celebrated seasons for a hitter in the history of the game; historically battling teammate Mickey Mantle for the single-season home run record of 60 held by George Herman "Babe" Ruth. The Babe's record stood from September 30, 1927 until Maris surpassed him on October 1, 1961, the final day of the season. Maris' Yankees would best the upstart Cincinnati Reds in five games, the outfielder's first of three World Series Championships with two coming as a Yankee and a third added with the St. Louis Cardinals. Evidence of general handling wear, with some visible creasing to the corners. Verso is heavily toned and displays date stamping of October 18, 1961. A hologram from the Boston Herald Archive has been applied to lower-right corner. 8" x 10" photo has been authenticated and encapsulated as Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
