Well known today as ringleader of the 1919 Black Sox, first baseman Charles Arnold "Chick" Gandil traveled a circuitous route to reach the major leagues. After debuting in the Pacific Coast League at the age of 18 in 1906, Gandil bounced around Arizona and Mexico during 1907, reportedly appearing for at least five different teams in the Arizona State League. During that time Gandil also competed for a squad sponsored by his employer, the Cananea Consolidated Copper Company, where he worked in their copper mines. Ultimately signed by the Chicago White Sox for a portion of the 1910 season, Gandil wouldn't become a full-time major leaguer until 1912, playing for Washington, Cleveland, and later Chicago once more before retiring in the spring of 1920. The presented mounted photograph features an enthusiastic young Gandil (top row third from right), and his 1907 Cananea teammates, over a decade prior to the deeds that would tarnish his legacy forever. Approx. 6" x 8.25" photo has survived in extraordinarily beautiful condition, well protected by the grey mount upon which it sits. Mount itself measures approx. 7.5" x 9.75" and appears to have been roughly trimmed around the perimeter. Verso remains blank and clean. An attractive piece documenting the early history of arguably the most infamous personality of the Deadball Era.
