Beautiful photograph of the Brooklyn pitcher, as distributed on September 16, 1909 by the Sporting News as part of an issue that featured 100 different supplements distributed between 1909 and 1913. This offering has been very well preserved, considering the large format, and it is now safely protected in a PSA slab. The corners are sharp, there is very little creasing (common to these supplements), and while there is some minor edge chipping, the edges are predominantly strong. This offering simply has tremendous eye appeal.

The details on this photo are spectacular, as it was taken in a studio and not on location with a Graflex camera. The northern exposure creates a dramatic shadow on the backdrop behind Rucker, who twice led the league in shutouts in his 10-year career.

Note the fabric and stitching pattern on the buttons down the center of his uniform, as well as the buttons on his convertible sleeves, allowing the uniform to be switched from long sleeve to short at a moment's notice. The ability to clearly see these details is only possible due to the large format printing of this classic portrait. While the piece has some light staining on the back, the image is extremely presentable and would make for an excellent display. An outstanding document, particularly interesting to Brooklyn or Dodgers collectors.
