We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set
- the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a
particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor
quality control in the era which resulted in
considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom
simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition
challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to
chipping and wear.
The example offered here is card #417, San Francisco Giants, graded
MINT
9. The 1963 Giants finished with a record of 88-74, good enough for third place in the 10-team National League. Having won the National League pennant the year before, expectations were high again for the 1963 team who had 5 players with 5+ WAR, led by Willie Mays who had a 10.6 WAR season. Willie McCovey led the team with 44 home runs, and Juan Marichal led the team with 25 wins, but it wasn't enough to overcome the juggernaut Dodgers to repeat as National League champions.
Their 1963 Topps card features the team photo in front of a yellow and red background with a blue circle inset containing the Giants logo. Four sharp corners and strong borders. The red side border has some light color loss especially at bottom, common to the set. A couple fisheyes in the blue inset and some print markings near the top of the yellow background keep this card from grading even higher than it already does.
You won't
find a nicer example of this card. And that isn't hyperbole. Not a
single example ever seen by PSA has received a higher grade than the
card offered here.
