We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set
- the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a
particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor
quality control in the era which resulted in
considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom
simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition
challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to
chipping and wear.
The example offered here is card #420, Bobby Richardson, graded MINT 9.
1962 was the best year of Bobby Richardson's impactful career, leading the league in hits while somehow also leading the league with 20 sacrifice hits. He set career highs in 15 offensive categories, but also won a Gold Glove Award, finishing 2nd in MVP voting behind his teammate, Mickey Mantle. Tough to follow up a performance like that, but Richardson finished 10th in MVP voting in 1963, winning another Gold Glove Award as he led the Yankees back to the World Series for the fourth consecutive year and fifth time in seven years.
His 1963 Topps card is a close up of the second baseman finishing his swing in his classic pinstriped uniform. Four fantastic corners and edges, with wonderful centering. Almost-but-not-quite perfect registration of the orange bottom border, while some centering issues and light staining near the top of the back are seemingly the only defects of this otherwise perfect card.
Only 5 examples graded by PSA have ever
received a higher grade than the MINT 9 offered here.
