We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set
- the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a
particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor
quality control in the era which resulted in
considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom
simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition
challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to
chipping and wear.
The example offered here is card #400, Frank Robinson, graded NM-MT 8.
Robinson was a 26-year-old 7-time All Star with 1,202 career hits, 241 career home runs, a Rookie of the Year Award, a Gold Glove Award, and an MVP Award all under his belt heading into the 1963 season. The slugger was so feared, he led the league in intentional walks for the 3rd consecutive time that season, and got hit by the most pitches for the 5th time in his career.
His 1963 Topps card shows the Reds slugger with a full smile, something the fierce competitor didn't let his opponents see too often. Great corners and edges, though centering is slightly east on the canvas. A small registration issue with the orange bottom border creates a drop shadow effect on his name, but a fisheye directly on his forehead in the inset photo explains the card's technical grade.
Only 37 of the more than 1,700 examples graded by PSA have ever received a higher grade than the NM-MT 8 offered here.
