We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set
- the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a
particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor
quality control in the era which resulted in
considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom
simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition
challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to
chipping and wear.
The example offered here is card #397, Kansas City Athletics, graded MINT
9. The Athletics finished 73-89 in 1963, good enough for 8th place in the 10-team American League. There wasn't a lot going for Kansas City that year, as they didn't have a single position player with a 4+ WAR season. Ken "Hawk" Harrelson and Tony LaRussa were both members of the team, but at ages 21 and 18, respectively, didn't get much playing time.
The team's 1963 Topps card features a red and green background, with a yellow circle inset containing the white elephant logo. Four terrific corners and borders, with fantastic centering provide a perfect frame on the canvas. Some minor fisheyes in the green side border are the main reason this card hasn't graded at a 10.
You won't find a nicer example of this card. And that isn't hyperbole. Not a single example ever seen by PSA has received a higher grade than the card offered here.
