Having never been actually issued for sale the 1967 Topps Stand-Ups set is one of the most rare postwar vintage baseball issues known. With just a handful of each of the set"s 24 subjects known to exist the commercial examples of these cards were intended to be die-cut from heavy cardboard so that they could be folded over into their cardboard base so they could "stand up" on display. Presented here is an extraordinarily rare proof example of Angels star Jim Fregosi. These rare cards can be found in two varieties: the actual printed samples with the die-cuts and uncut proofs printed on lighter paper. This is an example of the latter. Definitely one of the most rare card types of the postwar era and one of the most sought-after card types manufactured by Topps this is easily the most rare card of Fregosi.Currently PSA has elected not to assign numeric grades to the proof examples from this set but that has not always been the case. In the past PSA has qualified the proofs as "NO PERFORATIONS" and assigned numeric grades leading to a PSA 7 example of the Fregosi proof existing somewhere in the hobby. However if that card were resubmitted today it would simply receive an AUTHENTIC grade just like this one. SGC has no 1967 Topps Stand-Ups graded that are marked as proofs therefore it is unclear whether the company has simply not graded any (they have graded just 32 examples from this issue as of this writing) or does not differentiate between the two. Pressed to assign a condition to this card we would likely choose VG/EX as it does exhibit some moderate surface wear on the crisp black background. That said the overall appearance is extremely strong with sharper corners and edges and a very vibrant image. This is an extremely rare item from one of the most rare and desirable test issues produced by Topps in the 1960s.
