We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set - the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor quality control in the era which resulted in considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to chipping and wear.

The example offered here is card #500, Harmon Killebrew, graded NM-MT 8. Killer finished 4th in MVP voting in 1963 after leading the league in home runs for the second consecutive season, and third time to that point in his career. He did it again in 1964, making it three years in a row for him, and finished his Hall of Fame career having done it a total of 6 times. His 573 career home runs were good enough for 5th on the all-time list when he retired in 1975, and he remained in 5th place until Mark McGwire overtook him in 2001. He has since fallen all the way to 12th place.

His 1963 Topps card shows the smiling 27-year-old in an extreme close up, with the Yankee Stadium facade in the background. Nice edges and beautiful colors give this one tremendous eye appeal. Centering is just slightly north and west on the canvas. Registration is fairly nice on the red bottom border, often an issue with this set, but that area does fall victim to the light color loss around the edges and corners so common with this set.

Only 18 out of the more than 1,300 examples graded by PSA have ever received a higher grade than the NM-MT 8 offered here.
