We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set
- the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a
particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor
quality control in the era which resulted in
considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom
simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition
challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to
chipping and wear.
The example offered here is card #520, Orlando Cepeda, graded MINT 9. Cepeda was named an All Star for the 5th consecutive year in 1963, with 34 home runs, 97 RBI, a .316 batting average, and scoring 100 runs. Considering he was the third best player on that Giants team, it's no wonder they went to the World Series the year before.
His 1963 Topps card features some beautiful colors thanks to the cloudy blue sky in the background, and creating an almost 3D effect with his pose pointing his bat right at the camera. Four sharp corners and nice edges, with great centering. Registration with the red bottom border and green circle inset are just slightly off, with some light color loss along the edges and in the corners of that red area, so common with this set. A little snow, particularly noticeable in the green inset and on Cepeda's face, keep this card from grading even higher than it already has.
You
won't find a nicer example of this card. And that isn't hyperbole. Not a
single example ever seen by PSA has received a higher grade than the
card offered here.
