The American Caramel E90-1 issue is sometimes referred to as the T206
of
caramel issues, and has been dubbed "The Kraken" in some quarters due
to the challenges of collecting the 120 subjects found within. The set
was issued with a
stick of caramel that, as one might imagine, led to condition issues
which plague the set. This gorgeous example exhibits some light staining
on the front and back, common to the set.
One of "Wee" Willie
Keeler's most popular cards, the pink background
portait from the E90-1 issue depicts Keeler against a bright pink
background in one of the more colorful cards from the issue. Centering
is close, but diamond cutting, foxing (particularly on the back), and
corners
exhibiting rounding and wear contribute to the grade.
Keeler's
strategy to "hit 'em where they ain't" nearly led to him becoming the
second player in history to amass 3,000 career hits, falling just 68 shy
of the magical number over his 19-year Hall of Fame career. At the
point of Keeler's retirement, only Cap Anson had actually collected
3,000 career hits. One eight year stretch of Keeler's career saw him
produce 200 or more hits every single season, leading the league in
three of those years. Keeler achieved career highs in 1897 for batting
average (.424), hits (239), and doubles (27), while adding 19 triples
and 64 stolen bases in only 129 games. For his career, he had 145
triples and 495 stolen bases, good enough for 59th place and 40th place,
respectively, on MLB's all-time list. SGC has only graded 32 Keeler
Pink Background Portraits higher
than the Good 2 given to this example.
