Catcher/outfielder Jim McCauley had three years of major league experience with four teams, but is captured in five known poses with the Chicago Maroons of the Western Association, where he had a cup of coffee in 1888. Despite his brief stay there, McCauley is featured on no fewer than five poses in the N172 issue, plus this - a currently-undiscovered pose, taken by the Gehrig Studios of Chicago.  McCauley appears to be pictured against the same studio backdrop as his other N172 cards, the image boasting strong clarity and contrast.  Some wear is evident at the mount, with some very light foxing to the right of the image area.  In general, proofs of Chicago Maroons players are very rare, and highly coveted by 19th Century collectors.  More specifically, cards of McCauley are among the most rare N172s not in the California League, listed among the "Significant Rarities" in the Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company.
