Author of a brief career but recipient of no fewer than five poses in the Old Judge issue, Milwaukee pitcher William Schenkel is seen here with his hands cupped, outstretched in front of him, begging someone off camera to fill them with water to help quench his thirst. The desert behind him is arid, an awful place to play baseball, and his teammates forgot the Gatorade.
The card itself has been graded POOR 1 by SGC, a grade that seems harsh and is primarily driven by pencil writing and a stain on the reverse. The image is faded, of course, though still visible and the text legible. We have certainly seen lesser Old Judges graded significantly higher. A strong example of an attractive, affordable collector-grade 19th Century card.
