Celebrated in song by David Frishberg, Van Lingle Mungo was a workhorse pitcher for the Dodgers and Giants from 1931 to 1945, with a year out for World War 2 Military service.  Thought to have been the most-fined player of his era, his hot temper and alcohol consumption were legendary but he showed his true colors after retiring from baseball as an anti-segregationist businessman in South Carolina. He has signed a VG-EX PSA 4 1939 Play Ball, which has some dots of foxing while retaining its looks, in green ink that appears, well, somewhat musical in execution.  A PSA/DNA MINT 9 grade for the signature is the result and this is truly eye-catching piece. Mungo passed in 1985, rendering his signature on cards somewhat difficult. The card originates from the Shibe Park collection of autographed cards, an original owner collection carefully collected by a teenage boy who, in 1939 and 1940, obtained many autographs from players arriving at the train station near Shibe Park, and continued for many years to obtain signatures in person and through the mail.
