Burgess Whitehead was a tough moniker for a kid growing up but his middle name (Urquhart) was even tougher and his last name certainly suggested the most basic of nicknames be used for his baseball playing days. He was a utility infielder for the 1934 Gashouse Gang Cardinals squad that won the World Series and made it to two additional Fall Classics with the Giants, which is the team he's pictured with on his 1939 Play Ball card. The card is a PSA 4 in grade but we're shaking our heads at the PSA/DNA grade of 7 for his signature, which distinctively rolls up the right side of the card in dark blue ink, with just some minor lift in a couple of spots, a headscratcher to be sure. The card originates from the Shibe Park collection of autographed cards, an original owner collection carefully collected by a teenage boy who, in 1939 and 1940, obtained many autographs from players arriving at the train station near Shibe Park, and continued for many years to obtain signatures in person and through the mail..
