Issued during the dawn of card collecting"s Golden Age the 1951 Topps Connie Mack All-Stars were long bold cards featuring 11 of the greatest players to ever take the field. The cards were inserted into 1951 Topps Red and Blue Back bags each 2 1/16 x 5 1/4" card was die cut and meant to be folded and stood up. The obvious problem with this is that by using the cards as they were intended the cards would be severely downgraded for the condition-conscious collectors of the future.Today cards in any condition from the Connie Mack All-Stars set is scarce and in high demand. Prices of the set"s two key cards Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig continue to soar with EX condition cards soaring well over $1 000 in recent auctions.Presented here is a rare affordable collector-grade example of the card. Clearly perforated from its die cut the Gehrig still maintains the bulk of its parts but as you can see from the scan one piece of the card is missing entirely and the piece along the right border has separated completely from the card. It has been stored meticulously in plastic for years submitted by us to PSA in hopes that it could be encapsulated with its components for protection. Sadly that could not be the case and thus we offer the card in ungraded unencapsulated form here.Beyond the obvious condition flaws the card remains in fair to poor condition with significant surface and border wear some creasing and paper loss. Still this is a very difficult card to obtain in any grade and this collector-grade example will help satisfy the needs of Topps completists who are not as condition-conscious.
