Horizontal Old Judge card of Hall of Famer John Montgomery Ward, one of the most popular players of his day and possibly the most influential player of the 19th Century. Ward led the formation of the first player's union, and also orchestrated the establishment of the Player's League. Originally a pitcher, he moved to shortstop after throwing his arm out. Ward married actress Helen Dauvray, who donated the game's first Championship trophy, named the Dauvray Cup.
Catalogued as pose #478-8 in the N172 issue according to The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin and Company, the card has been graded PR 1 (MK) by PSA. Though the card does exhibit significant wear, the most visible wear lies at the left edge, and not as much within the image area. Pencil writing on the reverse accounts for the qualifier; some adhesive staining and foxing on the reverse contribute to the grade as well. Despite the low technical grade, a desirable horizontal card of an important Hall of Famer.
