If there was ever an ill-fated and extreme promotion to recall in MLB history, it would no doubt be “Disco Demolition Night” on July 12, 1979, at Chicago’s Comiskey Park. Staged between a doubleheader between the White Sox and the visiting Detroit Tigers, Chicago owner Bill Veeck and his son, Mike, orchestrated a promotion whereby anyone who brought a disco record to the park that day would gain admission for a dollar. It was promoted as an opportunity for rock fans to show their displeasure of disco music, which had seemingly taken center stage during the ‘70s. The discs were collected at the door, transferred to a large receptacle (dumpster) and then dumped in centerfield between the games. Then the records were blown up! White Sox officials had hoped for a crowd of 20,000 (5,000 more than usual). Instead, at least 50,000 fans packed the stadium, and thousands more continued to sneak in after capacity was reached and gates were closed. The spectacle erupted into a fire in center field, thousands of fans charged the field, and the second game of the doubleheader was canceled as Chicago was forced to forfeit. Presented here is an original ticket stub (Box B, Row A, Seat 11) to the first game of that fateful twi-night doubleheader. The bright yellow stub remains in stellar condition and earned a grade of PSA NM-MT 8.
