Ned Hanlon was a star centerfielder who played primarily with the Detroit Wolverines of the National League for most of the 1880's. He bounced into Pittsburgh from 1889-91, spending the middle season in the Steel City in the Player's League before ending up with the Baltimore Orioles in 1892, after a spell at home. It turned out to be a good hire for both manager and team, as Foxy Ned led his rowdy squads to four straight Temple Cups, winning the series in 1896.  He obtained some stock in the team when hired and eventually swapped it for that of the Brooklyn Superbas, where he managed some pennant winning squads as well.  He eventually ran afoul of Charles Ebbets and ended up suing the team over various financial matters, to no avail. After two years piloting Cincinnati, he retired and was eventually elected to the Hall of Fame as a manager in 1996, almost sixty years after his death.

He only has three cards in N172, which is a little odd considering his stature at the time. This is pose 212-1, a somewhat staid shot that offers an excellent look at the man and the Wolverines uniform and is quite well-developed. It's been slightly trimmed, as such is graded as Authentic by SGC, with a reverse that was once pasted into an album.
