While known primarily for its gorgeous baseball cards, the N162 Goodwin Champions set featured greats from several sports and pastimes, with a single card given over to Pool. A lithographic tour de force from the 19th Century, the cards were printed in Philadelphia by Geo. S. Harris & Sons, a firm that clearly knew what it was doing, and distributed in packs of Goodwin & Co.'s Gypsy Queen cigarettes. Alfredo de Oro (or D'Oro as seen here) was a Cuban who secured his first championship win in Fifteen-ball Pool in 1887, no doubt leading to his inclusion in the set, and won dozens of championships during a long career behind the felt. He was inducted into the Billiard Congress of America's Hall of Fame in 1967 and was a well-known figure around New York, to the point he was once mentioned in a Damon Runyon story.
The card, featuring a beautiful green background and a filled pool rack and cue, has been graded as an SGC 5. It's centered to the right, with a small tilt and some staining is seen along the right side border. The image of D'Oro is sharp, crisply reproduced and fairly stunning. The reverse is well-struck and shows some slight foxing along the right side.
