Posed 8" x 10" doubleweight photograph featuring New York Giants starting pitcher, Hal Schumacher and future Hall of Fame outfielder, Mel Ott. Interestingly, both men appear to be enjoying cigarettes as enthusiastic fans observe from behind a fence. This image appeared in at least two different magazine and newspaper ads for Camel cigarettes in 1935 along with images of other stars of the day like Lou Gehrig, Rip Collins, and teammate Carl Hubbell. By today's standards R.J. Reynolds tobacco was truly pushing the boundaries of ethical advertising with this campaign, stating: "In baseball, and in all other strenuous sports, leading athletes cite the fact that Camels are mild. They say you can smoke Camels freely and keep fit." Matte-finish photo remains stunningly clear with the central image aided by perfect lighting conditions. Evidence that the photo was likely mounted is visible in residue of tape along the bottom edge and brown paper remnants still affixed to verso. Guaranteed Type 1.
