Wheaties was running one of their periodic promotions using star athletes of the day in 1952, when this octet appeared on the back and sides of their cereal boxes. The full set had 30 athletes, of which 10 were baseball players but the use of a portrait plus an action shot doubled those figures This framed example features three Hall-of-Famers from the diamond with Ted Williams leading the way. Phil Rizzuto and George Kell are also here, along with Basketball Hall-of-Famers George Mikan and Jim Pollard, all time great golfers Sam Snead (another HOF entry) and LPGA founder Marlene Bauer (a South Dakota Hall of Fame member) with NFL Hall-of-Famer Doak Walker nicely rounding out this star-studded piece of cardboard.
A manufactured crease is seen after the first column of cards, which appeared on a side panel. The six cards from the back panel all have slight wear showing, most visible on the Williams and Pollard cards, although none of it is particularly distracting. The navy blue box color really makes the cards pop, almost as if they are lit up. An extraordinary collectible from over 70 years ago that would make a fine piece for your man cave or card room.
