Enormous original photograph used in production of Rheingold's 1952 print ad campaign featuring Bobby Thomson. Acquired directly from Rheingold by our consignor, the photo is mounted to heavy illustration board and measures 14" wide by 17.25" high. Production notes appear in the lower-right corner of mount with adhesive residue present across the top edge but photo remains unaffected. Large Rheingold credit stamping appears on verso with further handwritten notations. In 1951, the New York Giants third baseman made his lasting mark on Major League Baseball by hitting a three-run, walkoff home run in Game 3 of a special best-of-three NL playoff series between the Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers. Both teams finished the regular season with identical 96-58 records which prompted the three-game playoff. Thomson’s miraculous home run in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Giants an exciting 5-4 win and became known as the “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” as it catapulted the Giants into the 1951 World Series. Though they lost in six games to the two-time defending champion Yankees in the Fall Classic, Thomson’s shot remains one of the most significant home runs in baseball history.
