Future baseball Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig poses with champion archer, Paul Crouch in this 7" x 9" news service photo from Underwood. Like something right out ABC's Wide World of Sports, Gehrig and Crouch were at the Queens Valley Golf Club in Forest Hills, NY for an unusual competition "to settle most efficient way to go around nine holes," according to paper caption attached to verso. Three other competitors were also present, including: fishermen Fred Berger and Jack Schwinn, and golfer Eddie Driggs Jr. As documented by the New York Times the following day, Crouch won the event with a score of 30 across nine holes. Research indicates this was at least the second time the contest was held, with Gehrig emerging as the victor in 1925. Details on the 1925 affair were presented in the December issue of Popular Mechanics, of all places, later that year. This is a terrific look at a young Gehrig clutching a baseball during his prime and photo remains in exceptional condition with only light wear to the corners. A large paper caption is affixed to verso, providing information on the peculiar gathering of otherwise unrelated athletes. Authenticated and encapsulated as a Type 1 photo by PSA/DNA.
