Topps regionally tested the 1971 Greatest Moments set in the New York and Boston metro areas during the early part of the baseball season and it landed with a thud. Featuring 55 oversized 2.5 x 4.75 inch cards with the familiar black borders seen on that year's regularly issued cards, the set is a condition sensitive Topps test issue. To make things even more exciting, 33 of the subjects were short printed. You will see offerings of the 22 extra prints from time to time, but the short prints do not come up very often. The test bombed and it's a shame as the cards are gorgeous, looking especially nice in the oversized PSA holders.
This example of Jerry Grote, one of the short printed cards, is looking good with a PSA grade of Ex-Mint+ in a 6.5 holder. The colorful left side of the card really pops when compared to the black and white photo that takes up the majority of the real estate. As per the reverse, Grote had Tom Seaver to thank for his record 20 putouts for a catcher in a nine inning game, which is still the highwater mark, although it's since been tied.
