Stunning collection of 1882 H804-11 "Circled Position Series" advertising trade cards. One of the more popular of all the 19th Century trade card issues the 9-card set features colorfully illustrated cards featuring generic images of baseball players framed inside a bright blue border. Each image represents a different position on the baseball field though there is no card for "right field " as the set includes a "Batsman" instead. As is the case with most trade card issues these cards were printed on lighter stock making them condition sensitive. They were produced by Cosack & Company a Buffalo-based lithographer and feature delightful illustrations on postcard-sized paper the interesting illustrations making them one of the more popular advertising trade card sets. The cards like all advertising trade cards were printed and sold to different sponsors who applied their advertising message on both the front and back of each card. The most frequently found of these advertisers is Marshall & Ball a New Jersey-based clothier. Because of this may refer to these cards as the "Marshall & Ball" set. They frequently advertised on cards in the late 1800s including the Cosack & Co. trade cards. Presented here is a complete set of the 1882 cards all graded by SGC. Eight of the nine cards feature the Peck & Snyder set on the reverse; almost a complete matched set. The card that does not feature the Peck & Snyder ad is that of the third baseman. Each of the cards present in the EX to EX/NM range however most have some minor back damage the result of being stored in scrapbooks. As we frequently opine the scrapbooks that so frequently damage the reverse of 19th Century cards are the same ones that protect the fronts so well the reason we can own beautiful cards from a century ago.
