Vic Wertz came up with the Tigers, who dealt him to the Browns in mid-August 1952 before a trade to Cleveland occurred in the middle of the '54 campaign. He was, of course, on the batting end of "The Catch" in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series but had been pounding the baseball all around the Polo Grounds that afternoon and was already 4-4 when he launched the bomb that was tracked down by Willie Mays in the eighth inning. Wertz had a solid major league career, playing 17 power-laden seasons in all.
This 1952 Topps card still has him with Detroit and offers a compelling portrait, with some corner rounding. The signature is a real beauty, in blue and PSA/DNA Authentic. Wertz died in 1983 and missed the burgeoning show signing circuit. As a result, there are just 13 examples of signed 1952 Topps Vic Wertz cards on the PSA population report.
