The intricacies of the 1948 and 49 Leaf baseball and football sets lie in their condition sensitivity the scarcity of their short prints and their many variations. One of the set's best known and highly chased errors is with card #102 of Dodgers outfielder Gene Hermanski. Early in the set's production run it was discovered that Leaf left the "I" off Hermanski's last name on the front of the card and they were able to correct the error. This of course led to the "Hermansk" card becoming one of the most scarce and popular error cards of the gum card era. Today despite the card's popularity its graded population remains scarce with "Hermansk" errors graded at less than half the frequency of the more common variation of the card. Higher-grade examples of the Hermansk are particularly scarce; mid-grade examples such as this are in demand as a result.
