The 1973 film Bang the Drum Slowly starred Michael Moriarty and a young Robert DeNiro as teammates with the New York Mammoths, a fictional major league team with a startling resemblance to the Yankees. Moriarty and DeNiro strike up an unlikely friendship, Moriarty's character an intellectual pitcher and DeNiro's a less intelligent and less talented catcher. When Moriarty discovers DeNiro is suffering from Hodgkin's disease, he insists that his friend be his personal catcher. In an eerie similarity, DeNiro's catcher, who tragically loses his life at a young age, wears the number 15 - the number worn by Yankee catcher Thurman Munson.
Presented here is a prop jersey from the film, a McAuliffe brand flannel jersey size 38, bearing the number 6 (we could not ascertain the actor who wore this uniform number in the film). Clearly worn and stained, the jersey itself appears in good condition, its number, logo and tagging appear original to the piece. A high-quality jersey, and interesting prop from an American Film Institute nominee for best sports film.
