Wonderful c.1897 cabinet photograph depicting what appears to be a high school football team. This particular team holds the unique distinction of fielding a future major league baseball player named Barney Pelty, who stands in the top row, first from the right. Pelty, a pitcher by trade, debuted for the St. Louis Browns in 1903 at the age of 22 and appears on two cards in the T206 set as well as several other Deadball Era tobacco issues. Though large pieces are missing from the mount the photo itself has remained extremely well preserved. Verso is blank with heavy toning present. Measures approx. 11" x 14" overall. One of several pieces in our current auction emanating directly from the estate of Barney Pelty where they have remained until the time of this sale.
