Stunning 1887 cabinet featuring a woven silk inset manufactured in the "Stevengraph" process. The Stevengraph company produced a wide variety of woven silk materials near the turn of the century a product of the Stevengraph Company of Coventry England. The company produced colorful pictures woven from silk well into the 1930s but in 1940 the Stevengraph factory was destroyed in a German bombing attack. Today Stevengraphs are highly collectible. This particular example called "The Last Lap " features images of a cycle race five embroidered cyclists riding high-wheeled bicycles in front of a crowd of spectators. The full-color woven silk image is set inside a heavy cardboard frame. The entire piece has been professionally framed to a finished size of 8 3/4" x 6" making it impossible for us to comment on the corners and edges of the piece. The hanging wire on the reverse of the frame has become detached from one of its hooks a relatively easy repair. A beautiful 19th Century cycling-related piece illustrating the beautiful color imagery of the Stevengraph process.
