To produce the massive N172 and N173 Old Judge cards, Goodwin & Co utilized the services of a number of different photographers to obtain the photo negatives they turned into cards.  Often, the studios would produce their own "proof" cabinets, which were given to players, associates, or the public.  The Jos. Wood studio of New York was known to have produced the photos of New York Metropolitans players, sixteen of which featured portrait images of the players, each wearing polka-dot neckties.  These photos would comprise a tough subset of 1886 Old Judge cards featuring Mets players, known today as the "Spotted Tie" subset.  These cards are prized among 19th Century collectors today.  This example, featuring pitcher Al Mays, boasts a sharp, unblemished image, Mays' name handwritten in the lower border of the card near the photographer identification.  Wear is evident at the edges, particularly in the upper-left corner, while handwriting and some soiling is evident on the reverse.  A rare proof card from a well-known photographer, the photo used in one of the post popular subsets in the massive N172 Old Judge issue.
