Part of a larger, multi-sport issue, the W590 issue was originally not listed in the American Card Catalog, named in later editions. While the complete set includes prizefighters, movie stars, and other athletes, there are 41 known baseball players included in the set. The cards were issued in horizontal strips, with the card images extremely close to one another. As a result, the majority of graded examples have been graded AUTHENTIC by both PSA and SGC, with much border missing. As is the case with many strip card issues, low-grade examples are the norm.
Presented here is one of the key cards to the issue, that of Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig. Graded AUTHENTIC by SGC, the card is cut closely to the edges of the card image on three sides, with slightly irregular cuts. Unlike many examples of the card, however, the image quality is extremely strong, with no creases or paper loss, and very little surface wear. Of 16 examples of this card graded by SGC, 13 have graded AUTHENTIC with the remaining three graded 2 or lesser; this is an extremely pleasing example, with the eye appeal of a higher-grade card, if not the borders. As the hobby begins to delve into more obscure cards of its greats, the W590 Gehrig stands out as one card rapidly increasing in value, and this is a particularly attractive specimen.
