At the time this photo was taken both 37 year old Tris Speaker (AL) and 28 year old Rogers Hornsby (NL) were player/managers for their respective clubs and leading their respective leagues in the batting race. Both men would finish with the highest average of their careers with Speaker at .389 and Hornsby capturing the NL batting title with an incredible mark of .403. Hornsby would also be honored as the 1925 NL MVP.
This 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" photo from Cleveland based photographer Louis Van Oeyen (shooting for NEA's news photo service) captures a candid moment between the two sluggers in the dugout, with Speaker in full uniform and Hornsby sporting street clothes. Photo surface appears to be clean and free of obtrusive of blemishes, while verso includes a lengthy hand written inscription in pencil, dated 09/30/25. NEA news photo service stamping with date is present, along with Van Oeyen's personal stamp noting his association with NEA. Encapsulated as a Type 1 photo by PSA/DNA.
