4.25" x 6.5" B.S. Campbell Studios cabinet photograph of 21-year-old John Gilroy with the 1897 Norfolk Jewels, Class B Atlantic League. His best season came in 1896 while in Norfolk where he started 32 games, posting a 21-12 record while leading the team in victories. Gilroy also appeared in 13 games for the Washington Senators between 1895 and 1896, mostly as a pitcher. Tragically, John Gilroy fell ill with appendicitis in July of 1897 and passed away on August 4 after several surgeries couldn't save him. A promising baseball life and career cut short by a condition now routinely treated successfully. B.S. Campbell Studios is known to have shot several Norfolk players in 1897, though this mount differs from others that have surfaced.

Edges of mount exhibit minor wear with "Gilroy 1897" handwritten in ink below the photo at center. Photo itself is crystal clear and appears free of blemishes. Verso is clean with attractively printed graphics.
