The 1914 Cracker Jack Christy Mathewson is a show-stopping card, one of the hobby's most desirable and one of Mathewson's most highly sought-after cards. One of just two subjects included in both the 1914 and 1915 Cracker Jack sets where the player's pose was changed (the other featuring Del Pratt, also featured in this auction), the 1914 Cracker Jack Mathewson is the undisputed king of the Cracker Jack run. The Cracker Jack Mathewson is so elusive that most Cracker Jack collectors are content to build the 1915 set rather than the 1914, or to use combined elements of both, simply because of the unavailability of the Matty. Since 1914 Cracker Jacks are more rare than their 1915 counterparts in general, and due to the aforementioned pose variation, the 1914 Mathewson has reached mythical proportions in terms of desirability. This is the most coveted of all the Cracker Jack cards, and easily one of Mathewson's most desirable issues as well. Boasting an clean surface for the grade, along with wide borders and strong centering, the wear is largely relegated to the edges, which have fallen victim to some chipping to the light paper over the years, particularly at the bottom, notably with one small chip missing from the edge. A few light creases are also evident at the top-right corner, as well as at the center of the right edge, extending diagonally upward toward the Cracker Jack logo. Despite the technical flaws, the card presents extremely well for the grade, with robust color and outstanding print registration, and remains a museum-caliber centerpiece to even the most afdvanced collection. Clearly an example of one of the hobby's most important cards, and one of the undisputed keys to the popular 1914 Cracker Jack set.
