1950s advertising calendars featuring the images of former professional baseball players are often met with apathy from collectors despite their attractiveness and easy ability of pinpointing both age and geographic origin they are often viewed as "tribute" pieces much like a modern print of Mickey Mantle might be today. This example however is quite different. Simply a gorgeous colorful framed piece measuring an enormous 17" x 35" in its frame the 1954 calendar was a promotional calendar provided by the Corn States Serum Company of Omaha a manufacturer of medicines for livestock that provided its product to the veterinary industry. Graphically stunning the piece pictures Cobb in uniform coaching a young ballplayer as he slides. Along the bottom half of the poster is some advertising copy as well as biographical information on Cobb along with an image of his Hall of Fame bust. A 1954 monthly calendar is affixed with three stamples to the poster. Close inspection reveals surface abrasions and some heavy tears along the top right of the piece; the bottom of the January calendar appears to have been repaired with two large strip of clear tape that have yellowed with time. Neither of those flaws interfere with the tremendous graphic appeal of the piece. The frame of course prevents us from examining the reverse or edges of the piece so buyer beware however the overall graphic appeal of this item is simply tremendous.
